Technological properties

The speed of drying is slow. There is a slight risk of deformations occurring and cracks appearing, although some sources state that the risk of cracks appearing is high.

Sawing requires working with very powerful equipment. Saws are blunted very quickly, but ordinary steel or alloy saws can be used.

It is not recommended for rolled veneer due to its great weight, but is suitable for sliced veneer. Machining poses difficulties due to its hardness and requires the use of very powerful equipment. Tools are blunted very quickly and it is recommended to use tungsten carbide tools. Gluing is difficult due to the presence of resin cells. Nailing and screwing requires prior drilling. In the finish, it is recommended to use wax based products.

Origin and availability

It is found in eastern, central and western Africa. Its forest masses are significant. There is little production or export.

Description of the wood

The colour of the sapwood is paler than Wenge, and has the same whitish or light yellow grain, and the heartwood varies from dark brown to purple-black with fine brown grain. The green colour of the wood darkens when exposed to light. The sapwood is clearly differentiated and roundwood has a thickness of 2 to 3cm.

The fibre is straight. The grain is thick or coarse.

Natural durability

The wood is classified as durable against the action of fungi and termites, and not susceptible to attack by powderpost beetles. The heartwood is not penetrable.
