Technological properties

The drying speed is slow. There is a slight risk of deformations occurring and cracks appearing, although some sources mention that the risk of cracks appearing is high.

Sawing requires work with powerful machines. Saws are blunted very quickly but ordinary steel or alloy saws can be used.

It is not recommended for rolled veneer due to its great weight, but it is suitable for obtaining sliced veneer. Machining is difficult due to its hardness and requires the use of powerful machines. Tools are blunted very quickly and it is recommended to use tungsten carbide tools. Gluing is difficult due to the presence of resin cells. Nailing and screwing require prior drilling. In the finish, it is recommended to use wax based products.

Origin and availability

It is found in eastern, central and western Africa. Its forest masses are significant. Its production and export are scarce.

Description of the wood

The colour of the sapwood is whitish or light yellow and the heartwood varies from dark brown to purple-black with fine brown grain. The green colour of the wood darkens when exposed to light. The sapwood is clearly differentiated and in roundwood it has a thickness of 2 to 3cm.

The fibre is straight. The grain is coarse or thick.

The wood is resistant to acid. The roundwood may have a rotted or decomposed core. The M. Stuhlmannii species may exude resin.

Natural durability

The wood is classified as durable against the action of fungi and termites, and not susceptible to attack by powderpost beetles. The heartwood is not penetrable.
